Silicon Time

Introduction

The work juxtaposes in a 3×3 grid nine live feeds: Times Square in New York, the Shibuya crossing in Tokyo, Temple Bar in Dublin, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Abbey Road in London, the Seogang Bridge in Seoul, the Colosseum in Rome, Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok and the Sacré-Cœur in Paris.

Each Bitcoin block is mapped to a constant six seconds of output. The faster a block is actually produced, the slower the footage plays; the longer the interval between blocks, the faster it runs. The corresponding block height and full hash are inscribed in the lower left of every frame, so that the cryptographic timestamp and the real-world image appear together.

Background

Silicon Time maps nine live public webcam feeds from around the world onto the intervals between Bitcoin blocks, making images of the human city obey the time scale of a non-human computational system.

Concept

The work replaces the human observer with the continuously running Bitcoin network and asks: when a non-human system possesses its own unit of time, what form does human activity take within its coordinates?

Form

The nine feeds are recorded synchronously, after which a speed factor is computed from the timestamps of adjacent Bitcoin blocks and applied as frame-level variable-speed processing, grid compositing and hash watermarking. The work applies no smoothing to extreme block intervals, letting the random granularity of time enter the image directly.

Summary: Analyses the method of mapping nine public webcam feeds onto Bitcoin block intervals, and assesses the work from the perspectives of non-human time, data-driven moving image and the displacement of the subject.
