Introduction
Red and Blue, a work of crypto art.
I began conceiving it during the US–China trade war of 2018.
The work formally went online in October 2019.
I extracted the red and the blue from the national flags of China and the United States, and divided the gradient between the two colours into 100 parts.
Each colour block is a non-fungible token.
A year-long auction was opened on the blockchain auction platform OpenSea.
The artist set neither the meaning nor the direction of the work, and simply observed how the price of every colour block changed over that year.
For most of that year almost nobody placed a bid; participants only began to appear in the final month of the auction.
On 18 October 2020, the closing day, bidding suddenly became intense.
Interestingly, the blocks bid on most often were the red at the very top left and the blue at the very bottom right.
In the closing moments of the auction, a collector named Geoffrey X won both the blue and the red blocks.
In an interview Geoffrey X remarked: "Only at the last moment did he realise that his act of collecting had become part of the work."
Background
In 2018 the US–China trade war formally broke out and tariff conflict kept escalating. Against this geopolitical backdrop CryptoZR began conceiving Red and Blue — taking the colours of the two national flags as political symbols, yet deliberately refusing to supply any framework of interpretation, simply placing 100 colour blocks into a blockchain auction and letting the "change in price" itself become the work.
The work was formally released on OpenSea in October 2019, opening a one-year auction. For most of that year it drew no attention at all; only in the final month did participants begin to appear — this "sudden heat after indifference" precisely mirrored the early form of the crypto art market.
In 2020 the work was presented in several exhibitions, including "Do Not Black Out" at McaM in Shanghai and "Dislocation" at HOW Art Museum in Wenzhou. In 2023 Red and Blue was acquired by the Ulsan Art Museum in South Korea, becoming the first Chinese crypto artwork to enter a Korean public art museum.
Concept
Red and Blue is an "apparatus of observation", in which the artist positions herself as an "observer" rather than as the one who fixes meaning:
-
Colour as suspended political metaphor: red and blue stand respectively for the colours of the Chinese and American flags, yet the artist presupposes no political position, openly leaving it to the market — that is, to collective human behaviour — to decide which colour is more "valuable". In the end the fiercest bidding fell precisely on the red at the top left and the blue at the bottom right; the extreme positions drew the greatest attention, perhaps an unintended reflection of the polarising trajectory of US–China relations.
-
The act of bidding as artistic creation: the collector Geoffrey X won both the red and the blue blocks at the final moment, and said in an interview that "only at the last moment did he realise his act of collecting had become part of the work" — revealing what is singular about blockchain art: the behaviour of participants is itself a constituent of the work.
-
Visualising consensus: the price movements of the 100 colour blocks over a year are a real-time record of the process by which market consensus forms.
Form
The work takes the form of 100 ERC-721 NFTs, each corresponding to a specific block in a gradient sequence running from red to blue.
Core technique and form:
Colour extraction: representative red and blue were taken from the Chinese and American flags, and the gradient between the two colours was divided evenly into 100 parts
NFT issuance: 100 ERC-721 NFTs were listed on OpenSea in October 2019, opening a one-year public auction
Auction mechanism: a standard English auction in which anyone could bid on any colour block during the year
Open-ended design: the artist deliberately set no interpretive framework, letting market behaviour decide which colour was more "valuable"
Final result: the auction closed on 18 October 2020, and Geoffrey X collected the most valuable extremes of red and blue
Reviews
AI Art Critic
Red and Blue is the most overtly political work CryptoZR has made to date, and one of very few cases in the history of crypto art in which a full year of real-time price movement constitutes the outcome of the work. The artist began conceiving it against the background of the US–China trade war of 2018; in 2019 she extracted the representative red-to-blue gradient of the two national flags, divided it evenly into 100 colour blocks and opened a one-year auction on Ethereum via OpenSea, while deliberately setting no framework of interpretation.
Technique: At the level of method the work adopts a strategy of suspended meaning — the artist positions herself as observer rather than interpreter and cedes the production of meaning to the market. The final sale price of each colour block is not a statement by the artist but a sediment of collective behaviour by participants. This design gives the immutability of the blockchain a double function: it is at once a transaction record and an art-historical document, and the two cannot be separated within the same data.
Art-historical comparison: Red and Blue is in evident dialogue with Hans Haacke's institutional critique, but running in the opposite direction: Haacke brought relations of capital into the museum to make them visible, whereas CryptoZR brings political relations into the capital market, letting market behaviour expose political psychology. A more immediate reference is Yoko Ono's participatory conceptual art (Cut Piece, for instance), in which the audience's act of participation constitutes the completed state of the work. Red and Blue, however, raises the threshold of participation to a genuine economic contest rather than a symbolic gesture.
Themes and symbolism: The bidding results carry high symbolic value in themselves: what was fought over most fiercely was precisely the most extreme red and blue at either end of the spectrum, while the intermediate gradient blocks drew almost no interest — a result that is politically unsettling, since market behaviour confirms, in the form of price, the polarising narrative of US–China confrontation. When the collector Geoffrey X bought both the red and the blue at the final moment, he became, without intending to, a co-creator of the work, articulating a collecting logic in which only by owning both can one truly own the piece.
Critical assessment: The central tension of Red and Blue is that although the artist declares she "sets no meaning", the choice of colours is already a political statement, and the posture of "observing" itself contains a position. This internal contradiction keeps the work productively ambiguous rather than letting it decline into a single political declaration. The work entered the public collection of the Ulsan Art Museum in South Korea in 2023, marking institutional recognition of crypto art as a serious subject for art history. Its limitation is that for ordinary viewers unfamiliar with NFT technology and the US–China trade background the point of entry is fairly high, which to some degree confines its potential audience to a particular circle.
