Introduction
1000EYE was created in 2019; at the centre of the picture is the "eye" of Satoshi Nakamoto, the father of Bitcoin.
Following the arrangement of the Ulam spiral (the spiral of prime numbers),
I selected the eyes of 1,000 figures and placed them on the prime-number points, issuing a corresponding total of 1,000 NFTs (non-fungible tokens).
The work subjects "non-fungible" persons to a process of "fungibilisation".
The figures within 1000EYE are rendered "anonymous" — all except Satoshi Nakamoto.
For the release, the closing index of the first Nasdaq trading day after the sale concluded was used as a random seed to shuffle the image numbers assigned to the 1,000 NFTs.
Once the numbering had been shuffled, not even the artist could supply any usable information about the order of the images, which guaranteed the fairness of the distribution.
Only on the first trading day after the sale ended was the eye corresponding to each token ID computed.
The sale opened at 13:00 UTC on 26 September 2021 and every NFT was sold within two hours, for total sales of 1,000 ETH.
Background
In 2019 CryptoZR set about creating 1000EYE. NFT technology was still at an early stage (the smart contract was deployed on 26 August 2019) and no global NFT market yet existed. The artist completed the entire oil painting by hand over more than a year, answering the core spirit of the blockchain with a "proof of work of crypto art".
The work takes its inspiration from the prime spiral discovered by the mathematician Stanislaw Ulam — on a two-dimensional plane, prime numbers form regular patterns along the diagonals. The artist combined this mathematical order with the "non-fungible" quality of human identity, placing Satoshi Nakamoto, that anonymous presence, at the centre in order to examine identity, authority and consensus.
In September 2021 all 1,000 NFTs of 1000EYE sold out within two hours at 1 ETH each, for total sales of 1,000 ETH (about 26 million RMB), making it the highest-priced NFT work in China at the time and earning it a place in AMEX Essential's "Best Global Exhibitions of Summer 2021".
Concept
At the heart of 1000EYE lies a dialectical inquiry into the "fungible" and the "non-fungible":
-
An experiment in making NFTs fungible: every NFT (non-fungible token) is supposed to be unique, yet by hiding the metadata attributes 1000EYE renders its 1,000 NFTs outwardly indistinguishable, giving them the circulating character of a currency (a fungible token) and challenging the mechanism by which NFT scarcity is judged.
-
Anonymisation and identity politics: of the 1,000 figures only Satoshi Nakamoto is openly identified; all the rest are anonymous. This design is a metaphor for the core values of the crypto community — decentralisation and anonymity.
-
Proof of work translated into art: every image of an eye was painted by hand in oils, answering Bitcoin's "proof of work" with bodily labour and re-anchoring the value of the creator's "presence" in an age awash with digital art.
Form
The work consists of a single hand-painted oil painting together with 1,000 ERC-721 NFTs, the two mapped onto one another through metadata correspondences.
Core technique and form:
Hand-painted oils: the entire work was painted by hand by the artist, structured on the prime (Ulam) spiral and containing images of the eyes of 1,000 figures; it took over a year to complete
NFT issuance: 1,000 ERC-721 NFTs went on public sale at 13:00 UTC on 26 September 2021 and sold out within two hours
Random allocation: the closing index of the first Nasdaq trading day after the sale ended was used as a random seed to shuffle the image numbers assigned to the 1,000 NFTs, ensuring fairness
Anonymisation: attribute information in the metadata was hidden, minimising any identifiable difference between the figures
Price: 1 ETH each, for total sales of 1,000 ETH
Reviews
DecryptoArt
Review title: 1000EYE — Fungible the NFTs
Summary: The article identifies 1000EYE as a significant work from the early history of NFTs, dividing a single oil painting into 1,000 independent NFTs, each of which can exist on its own or be recombined to map back onto the original painting. By hiding the metadata attributes the artist minimises the differences between the figures, so that the NFTs take on the character of a currency rather than of collectibles, challenging conventional mechanisms for judging scarcity and asserting the primacy of aesthetic experience over data attributes.
