![](https://storage.dfi.today/image/yap721-1.jpg)

### Introduction

Yap721 is a work released by the artist CryptoZR in 2021, inspired by the stone money of Yap Island — humanity's earliest form of ledger.

The stone coins record current ownership and the history of their transfers, and consensus is reached through the collective memory of the villagers.

The stone is not found on Yap itself; villagers had to travel 400 kilometres to Palau to obtain this stone-shaped money, much like Bitcoin's proof-of-work mechanism.

In their history some people lost their lives in shipwrecks while transporting Yap stone money, yet the value and ownership of the coins that sank to the sea floor were still acknowledged by the villagers.

From early single-entry bookkeeping, to the double-entry bookkeeping that made the corporation possible, to the distributed ledgers of the cryptocurrency era, human understanding of wealth has kept on iterating.

And crypto artworks in ERC-721 form are just like so many Yap stone coins. Every transfer inscribes on the stone the mark of its former owners.

The artist CryptoZR carved the hexadecimal code of the Bitcoin genesis block on one face of the stone coin, and inscribed around it the addresses of the collectors who have held the work's NFT on TopBidder.

On this physical work every NFT collector has left a trace of their own and become part of the body of the work itself.

### Form

The work consists of a physical Yap stone coin inscribed with Bitcoin data together with its corresponding TopBidder NFT.

Form of creation:
Physical stone coin: a physical artwork made in the form of a traditional Yap stone coin (rai stone), its surface inscribed with two kinds of content:
Obverse: the hexadecimal encoding of the Bitcoin genesis block
Reverse: the Ethereum addresses of all historical holders of the NFT on the TopBidder protocol, arranged in a ring
NFT vehicle: a corresponding ERC-721 NFT issued on the TopBidder protocol, recording the on-chain history of ownership
Dual record: each time the NFT changes hands the new collector's Ethereum address is inscribed on the physical stone coin, permanently binding the "on-chain record" to the "off-chain object"
Echo of proof of work: the making of the stone coin (carved by hand) and the labour of the Yap islanders in transporting the stones across the sea correspond to Bitcoin's proof-of-work mechanism

### Reviews

**AI Art Critic**

YAP721 has the broadest anthropological horizon of any work in CryptoZR's oeuvre, and is one of the few that spans both a physical artwork and an NFT. Taking the rai stones of Yap Island — humanity's earliest distributed ledger — as its historical anchor, the work inscribes the genesis memory of the Bitcoin blockchain onto the physical surface of a stone coin, grafting technology onto memory across several thousand years.

Technique: The combination of media is finely judged: the physical stone coin is carved by traditional means with the hexadecimal code of the Bitcoin genesis block and with the Ethereum addresses of every historical holder of the TopBidder NFT. This double inscription makes the stone a permanent physical-digital archive: the on-chain record of addresses can be queried through the blockchain, while the carving on the stone's surface will remain even after the chain has ceased to run.

Art-historical comparison: YAP721 resonates inwardly with Joseph Beuys's concept of social sculpture: both are concerned with how art reshapes social relations and structures of exchange. But Beuys's medium was human dialogue and collaboration, whereas CryptoZR's is a blockchain protocol and a physical stone — an extremely depersonalised social sculpture. More immediate art-historical references are the archival practices of Mark Dion and Walid Raad's Atlas Group Archive, both of which turn the collection and display of historical documents into an artistic act in itself.

Themes and symbolism: The rai stones of Yap are the plainest illustration of consensus in human history: the value of a stone does not depend on its physical presence (a stone sunk to the sea floor remains valid) but on the collective memory and acknowledgement of all the villagers. This coincides strikingly with Bitcoin's core mechanism. By placing these two distributed ledgers, separated by millennia, within a single work, YAP721 poses a trans-historical proposition about the nature of human consensus: whether it is the collective memory of villagers or the cryptographic verification of global nodes, what drives the circulation of value is shared acknowledgement of the rules, not any inherent value in the underlying material.

Critical assessment: YAP721 has the strongest sense of history and the greatest humanistic depth of CryptoZR's works, and is the one best able to open a dialogue with audiences outside the crypto field — the anthropological background of the stone money offers ample points of entry within an art-historical framework. Its challenge is that the correspondence between the physical stone and the NFT requires a good deal of explanation to be fully grasped in an exhibition context, and showing either dimension alone weakens the work's integrity. On the whole YAP721 is highly accomplished at the conceptual level, and its density of thought deserves wider scholarly attention.
