![The Consensus](https://storage.dfi.today/cryptozr/images/works/311ebc43-TheConsensus.png)

《The Consensus》

### Introduction

In The Consensus the artist has arranged in chronological order a selection of the assessments of Bitcoin made by mainstream media and well-known figures since its birth, presenting them in the typographic format of The Times. The work records the publisher, position, article title and content, source, date of publication, corresponding BTC price and original link for each comment. These opinions, crossing time and space, form a kind of consensus.

The artist collected 410 articles in all, covering reporting across the fifteen years from 2010 to 2024\. Had a person bought 100 dollars of BTC on the date of each report, they would now hold 1,043 BTC, worth more than 100 million dollars.

At the core of The Consensus is the data structure behind those 410 pieces of media coverage, which takes different forms according to the medium that carries it. Each individual media fragment contains its date of publication and the corresponding BTC price. The artist arranged these articles chronologically from left to right so that every piece of information becomes a timestamp, indexed and located through a QR code linking to the article.

As crypto culture comes to influence global politics, technology and finance, we can see several major sovereign states shifting from their original opposition to support. Perhaps the true consensus does not come from these conservative media outlets and opinion leaders, but from every person willing to act.

### Background

The Consensus was created in 2024 from the raw material of fifteen years of media commentary on Bitcoin since its birth in 2009\. The artist collected 410 reports from mainstream financial media including CNBC, Bloomberg, Forbes and the Financial Times, and presented them chronologically in the typographic format of The Times.

These 410 reports cover the most representative "obituaries" and expressions of doubt across Bitcoin's development. The artist discovered an intriguing regularity: had a person bought 100 dollars of Bitcoin on the date of each report, by 2024 they would hold 1,043 bitcoins worth more than 100 million dollars — which is the most forceful possible rebuttal of "expert consensus".

In August 2025 The Consensus was acquired by the noted Swiss collector Uli Sigg. Sigg is one of the world's most important collectors of Chinese contemporary art and has donated a large part of his collection to M+ in Hong Kong. That same month the work was invited to be shown at the 2025 Bitcoin Asia conference in Hong Kong.

### Concept

The Consensus challenges the fundamental divergence between "expert consensus" and "market consensus":

1. The timestamp as artistic medium: each media comment carries its date of publication and the corresponding BTC price, making the whole work a dynamic timeline. Past comments look absurd from the vantage point of the present, and present comments may look equally absurd in the future.
2. How consensus forms: Bitcoin's consensus comes from every person "willing to act", not from opinion leaders or traditional media. Real consensus does not rest on authority but on the endorsement participants give through concrete action.
3. Openness and incompletion: commentary from after 2025 is already implicit in the structure of the work — when future viewers look back on this piece released in 2024, they will find a deeper meaning in it. This open temporal structure gives the work continuity and room to expand.

### Form

The work uses Bitcoin blockchain inscriptions (Bitcoin Ordinals) as its technical vehicle, while also presenting the data as print and as a website.

Form of creation:
Data collection: the artist systematically compiled 410 pieces of mainstream media commentary on Bitcoin from CNBC, Bloomberg, Forbes, the Financial Times and others (2010–2024)
Typographic design: laid out in the classic newspaper format of The Times, each record containing publisher, position, article title, summary, source, date of publication, corresponding BTC price and a QR code linking to the original
Physical form: the data is presented as an array of wooden blocks, each block corresponding to one comment, arranged chronologically from left to right
Painted form: part of the data is presented as oil painting
Blockchain form: the core data structure is inscribed on the Bitcoin chain (Bitcoin Ordinals) as a permanent timestamped record
Dynamic structure: commentary from after 2025 is already implicit in the work's data structure, and future viewers will find a deeper meaning in it

### Reviews

**AI Art Critic**

The Consensus is the most ambitious of CryptoZR's works to date in its historical and social dimensions, and the richest in physical form. Through the systematic compilation of 410 pieces of media commentary on Bitcoin (2010–2024), the work constructs an "archive of doubt" spanning fifteen years, making visible, in the form of a time series, the cognitive bias of human institutions towards the new.

Technique: The central method is the aestheticisation of the data archive: the artist compiles the commentary systematically in the typographic format of The Times, each record containing publisher, date of publication, corresponding BTC price and a QR code linking to the original, forming a searchable and traceable historical database. The design embeds the instruments of data analysis (timeline, price index, institutional names) within the aesthetic framework of a traditional newspaper layout, producing a visual tension between content (anti-Bitcoin commentary) and form (the authority of traditional media).

Art-historical comparison: The Consensus may be set beside Hans-Peter Feldmann's archive art, which reconstructs historical narrative through the systematic collection of images. CryptoZR's archive, however, is not neutral: it has a critical apparatus with a definite direction built into it, since the juxtaposition of price data automatically converts every "obituary" into an ironic text. In this respect The Consensus comes closer to what Roland Barthes called the decoding of myth — restoring authoritative discourse that poses as objective fact to the status of an ideological construction open to question.

Themes and symbolism: The work's central tension lies in the doubleness of the concept of consensus itself. On one side, these 410 comments represent the "consensus" of traditional institutional authority (Bitcoin is a fraud, a bubble, rat poison). On the other, Bitcoin's eventual development proved that a different consensus — one issuing from actors (buyers, users, developers) rather than opinion leaders — was the decisive force. Uli Sigg's acquisition lends the work an additional context: the single most important collector to have brought Chinese contemporary art into Western view completes, through the act of collecting itself, a practical annotation to the proposition of how consensus forms.

Critical assessment: The Consensus is a historical work in the true sense, and its value will grow with time: as Bitcoin continues to develop, this archive of dissent from 2010 to 2024 will become ever more ironic and ever more historically valuable. The work's intellectual density is very high, yet its entrance is welcoming — the layout in the manner of The Times offers the viewer a familiar reading framework. Its open structure, with future commentary implicit in the data, makes the work conceptually impossible to close, an innovation worth noting in contemporary art's discussion of temporality.
