### Introduction

Small Goal is a work created using Ethereum decentralised finance technology.

In China, "a small goal" is an internet meme standing for 100 million RMB.

Using the ERC-20 token standard, the artist CryptoZR issued a modified digital token named Small Goal, or SG for short.

The work was released on 10 July 2020.

Through the decentralised exchange Uniswap the artist created a market between SG and Ether, pricing SG at 1 RMB per token.

She then locked the token's transfer function and began airdropping to the crypto community, each member receiving 100 million SG.

Their digital wallets showed their assets increased by one "small goal".

The episode set off discussion within the community; one member tried to transfer his SG, and at that moment the SG in his account suddenly vanished.

### Background

In 2020, as COVID-19 battered the global economy, the meme "a small goal" circulated widely on the Chinese internet — it comes from a remark made in 2016 by the property tycoon Wang Jianlin: "Set yourself a small goal first, like earning 100 million." One hundred million RMB became the emblematic figure for the wealth gap and for the desire for wealth.

That same year Ethereum's DeFi (decentralised finance) ecosystem exploded and decentralised exchanges such as Uniswap took off. CryptoZR sharply perceived the resonance between the cultural symbol of the "small goal" and DeFi technology, and used DeFi mechanisms to create an artistic experiment in which everyone could "own a small goal", examining the relationship between the desire for wealth and digital emptiness.

### Concept

Small Goal examines the illusoriness of wealth as a symbol and the viral transmission of internet culture:

1. The empty nature of digital currency: every holder saw "100 million" appear in their wallet, yet the moment they tried to realise it — to transfer it — the figure equivalent to 100 million RMB instantly disappeared. In a single interaction the work exposes the nature of the internet's illusion of wealth.
2. The economics of the internet meme: taking the highly transmissible cultural symbol of the "small goal" as its entry point, the work fuses a popular meme with DeFi technology, so that participants undergo a thought experiment about digital value even as they play along with the joke.
3. A design of locking and losing: the token's transfer function was "locked" — a design that is a metaphor for the illusory quality of online wealth: you can "own" it (it shows in your wallet) but you cannot truly "use" it (it disappears on transfer). To hold without being able to circulate is a minimalist philosophy of wealth and desire.

### Form

The work centres on DeFi (decentralised finance) technology and modifies the transfer-function logic of an ERC-20 token.

Core technique and form:
Token modification: the transfer function of a standard ERC-20 contract was altered so that any transfer triggers a special mechanism causing all the tokens to be destroyed as they are sent
Uniswap liquidity pool: an SG/ETH pair was created on the decentralised exchange Uniswap, pricing each SG at 1 RMB, after which the transfer function was locked
Airdrop mechanism: members of the crypto community were airdropped 100 million SG each (that is, "a small goal")
Date of issue: 10 July 2020
Experience of the work: holders saw their wallet balance grow by digital assets worth 100 million RMB; when they attempted to transfer, the tokens vanished into thin air — this "lost the moment you try" experience forms the core narrative of the work

### Reviews

**AI Art Critic**

Taking the Chinese internet meme of "100 million RMB" as its entry point, Small Goal uses DeFi technology to create a paradoxical digital asset — owned while held, lost the moment it moves — and performs a precise sociological dissection of the desire for wealth and the emptiness of the digital.

Technique: The core technical innovation is a modification of the ERC-20 transfer function: the token's trading capability is locked and any transfer triggers the complete destruction of the tokens. The design thoroughly separates the two properties of a digital asset (value in holding versus value in exchange), producing a symbol of wealth that can only be displayed statically and never circulated. The creation of a Uniswap liquidity pool adds a further layer of irony: this untradeable token nonetheless possesses a formal listed price on a decentralised exchange.

Art-historical comparison: Small Goal can be read alongside Chris Burden's performance work or Damien Hirst's commodity art, which share a concern with the embodiment of capital within an artistic context. A more immediate cultural reference is Baudrillard's theory of simulacra: the token stands for 100 million RMB, but that sum is itself a symbol which has lost its reality within the context of the internet. The token is a symbol of a symbol, its "value" composed of three superimposed layers of simulacrum: currency, internet meme, crypto token.

Themes and symbolism: In Wang Jianlin's original remark, 100 million RMB was an astronomical figure tossed off lightly; Small Goal turns it into a number anyone can "own" — yet the illusoriness of that ownership is dramatically revealed by a transfer mechanism that loses it the moment it is tested. The work carries a sharp comment on wealth anxiety in Chinese society: is the wealth we pursue itself no more than a numerical symbol that can never truly be touched?

Critical assessment: Small Goal is the most publicly accessible of CryptoZR's works — the "small goal" meme carries very high transmissive potential in itself, letting the work reach beyond the crypto circle directly to a far wider population of Chinese internet users. It has its limitation nonetheless: the restricted set of airdrop recipients (members of the crypto community) meant that most of the potential audience, ordinary internet users, never encountered the work at all. Had a larger-scale airdrop replaced the small-circle experiment, the critical force of Small Goal would have been considerably greater. On the whole this is a work finely balanced between technical simplicity and cultural resonance.
