### Introduction

In this new work the crypto artist CryptoZR sets an image generated by artificial intelligence (AI) alongside a traditional human painting, probing deep questions of technology and art, of essence and boundary. The work juxtaposes a digital image drawn by an AI text-to-image model with a hand-painted oil painting, inviting the viewer to consider how the two differ in visual effect and emotional content. In this artistic context we are able to reflect on the essential difference between AI-generated images and human painting, on the boundary between the virtual and the real, and on what quantum theory suggests about how we perceive the continuity of reality.

### Background

When we examine a high-resolution AI image and a traditional oil painting with the naked eye at a normal viewing distance, we may find it hard to detect any obvious difference: both can present a coherent, lifelike visual effect. Yet this "lifelikeness" is to a large degree constrained by the resolution of the human senses. Our eyes and brain have finite resolving power; once an image's pixel density passes a certain threshold, we can no longer perceive its discrete units. To the human eye an oil painting likewise appears as continuous colour and form. But if we magnify the image to the limit, the difference stands out: the former will ultimately reveal a mosaic-like grid of pixels, while the latter shows grains of pigment or the weave of the canvas rather than a tidy lattice of squares. Compared with the pixel blocks of the AI image, the detail of the oil painting displays a natural, irregular continuity, containing countless tiny but coherent variations, as if unconstrained by any smallest unit.

Is the reality we perceive itself continuous, divisible without limit, or discrete, with a smallest "pixel" unit? In everyday experience space and time feel smooth and continuous, as though, like an oil painting, they contain no abrupt jumps at any scale. But human intuition is not always reliable. As the famous paradox of the ancient Greek philosopher Zeno reveals, if the path of a motion is divided infinitely, then logically we can never reach the end. Perhaps we perceive a smooth reality only because we have not yet magnified to a scale fine enough to observe the basic units of which reality is composed.

### Concept

An AI image appears continuous at the macro level but is in fact stitched together from pixels; our space and time appear continuous at the macro level, but at the micro level may likewise be built from quantum "pixels". Most physicists today share a consensus that no distance smaller than the Planck length can exist, which hints that reality has a minimum granularity. Perhaps the coherent reality our senses show us is merely an illusion of scale, erected upon an inconceivably fine discrete foundation. Just as a high-resolution screen deceives our eyes, a universe composed of elementary quantum units may deceive our intuition, persuading us that it is continuous and infinitely divisible, until we "zoom in" to the Planck scale and look.
