PRO Token

PRO Token

  • 合约地址:0x8377ee6d3545bc6ff1425ee3015dc648b149c7b2(以太坊主网)

主题与象征: 作品名"无中生有"(Out of Nothing)在中文语境中兼含"凭空创造"与"无中生有(捏造)"两层含义,这一双关在英文标题中同样成立(create something out of nothing vs. create from nothing)。

Introduction

Out of Nothing is the earliest blockchain art experiment initiated by the artist CryptoZR.

Work on it began in December 2017 and it was released on 5 January 2018.

The artist modified the Ethereum ERC-20 token contract so that every Ethereum address could display a token named PRO Token.

This meant that the more than five hundred thousand active Ethereum addresses of the time had only to open their wallets for 88,888 PRO Tokens to appear out of nowhere.

When issuing the token the artist designed a mechanism whereby the 88,888 tokens at each address would come into being only upon the first transfer out.

So some people transferred them to others, and some to other addresses of their own.

A little over ten days later this new digital token was listed on the decentralised exchange EtherDelta.

The first trade in PRO came on the 34th day: a purchase of 4 million PRO with 0.28 ETH.

The work examines how consensus forms, and how the legitimacy of money rests on consensus.

Even if the token itself is meaningless, it will gradually acquire value as long as more people pay attention to it.

Background

In 2017 a wave of blockchain entrepreneurship was rising in China and the Ethereum ecosystem was in a phase of experimental expansion. CryptoZR had entered the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2016 to pursue a master's degree, and began exploring the underlying technology of the blockchain as a medium for making art.

The artist recognised that the "display out of nowhere" mechanism of the ERC-20 token contract carried strong potential as conceptual art: if every Ethereum address could "own" a token without performing any action at all, then where does that "value" actually come from? The question led her to modify the ERC-20 standard and create a conceptual work in which more than five hundred thousand Ethereum addresses held tokens "out of nowhere".

Work began in December 2017 and the piece was released on 5 January 2018, making it CryptoZR's earliest recorded blockchain art experiment. To this day tokens are still being transferred.

Concept

The central proposition of Out of Nothing is that the legitimacy of money rests on consensus rather than on intrinsic value.

The artist invokes the economic theory of "monetary consensus": even if a token is in itself entirely meaningless, it will generate value so long as enough people acknowledge and use it. This is exactly what happened in Bitcoin's early history — for the first few years after Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin white paper, Bitcoin was worth almost nothing, until community consensus gradually took hold.

The design of the mechanism embodies this idea as well: a token is truly "minted" only upon its "first transfer out" — that is, the passage from nothingness into existence is completed only when the holder actively participates through the act of transferring. This "observer effect" suggests that consensus is itself the act by which value is created.

Form

The work uses the Ethereum ERC-20 token contract as its medium. The artist modified the standard ERC-20 contract so that the "balanceOf" function returns 88,888.88 PRO Tokens for any address — whether or not that address actually exists on the blockchain, querying the balance will display this number.

Key technical design:
Display out of nowhere: the contract was modified so that every address inherently "holds" tokens, while total supply remains 0
Minted on first transfer: a token is truly created and sent out of nothingness only when an address initiates its first transfer

Reviews

AI Art Critic

Out of Nothing is CryptoZR's earliest blockchain art experiment and the ontological point of departure for her entire body of work. Using an Ethereum ERC-20 contract as its medium, the work modifies the token's display logic so that more than five hundred thousand active addresses "hold" 88,888.88 PRO Tokens out of nowhere, while the tokens are truly minted only upon the first transfer. This design, separating "existence" from "realisation", forms the philosophical core of the work.

Technique: In its making, Out of Nothing embodies the crypto-art logic of "code as medium". The smart contract is not the work's channel of distribution but the work itself — the modified balanceOf function turns "token balance" into an illusion existing at the level of contract syntax, which only the act of transfer can make real. The mechanism is close to elegant in technical terms: with a minimal modification to the code the artist creates a scenario that could never occur within the real monetary system.

Art-historical comparison: In the genealogy of conceptual art, Out of Nothing inherits the logic of Marcel Duchamp's readymade — not creating a new object, but completing an artistic act by redefining the rules of an existing system. Unlike Duchamp, however, who chose industrial products, the "readymade" CryptoZR selects is a functioning global monetary network; what she alters is not the context of an object but the underlying logic of a system. Joseph Beuys proposed that "everyone is an artist"; CryptoZR's work implies instead that "every Ethereum address is a recipient of art" — extending the audience for art from museum visitors to participants in the global digital economy.

Themes and symbolism: The title "无中生有" (Out of Nothing) carries in Chinese both the sense of "creating from nothing" and of "fabricating", a double meaning that holds in English as well (to create something out of nothing versus to make it up). In the philosophy of money the work points straight at the central paradox of the fiat system: modern money is likewise a product of consensus created "out of nothing", its value deriving from collective acknowledgement rather than intrinsic properties. The trajectory of PRO Token's value — from zero to a first trade on the 34th day, from meaninglessness to being assigned an actual price — is a miniature re-enactment of how human monetary consensus forms.

Critical assessment: As a work of 2017–2018, Out of Nothing anticipated the central propositions of the NFT art wave of the following years and is genuinely an experiment that ran "ahead of the market". Its limitation is that for the vast majority of Ethereum users the work's presence was extremely faint — they never realised they had become recipients of art. This "unwitting participation" is both the work's conceptual strength (demonstrating that consensus can form without awareness) and the source of its difficulty in circulating. Yet it is precisely this deliberate refusal to publicise that keeps Out of Nothing highly consistent with itself: a work about whether consensus can arise out of nothing is quietly conducting that very experiment.
