### Introduction

Drawing on the properties of NFTs, the artist wanted 100,000 people on the blockchain to be able to own her work for a period of time rather than permanently. This was an entirely new idea.

The artist airdropped to 100,000 users, but when 2,050 tokens had been distributed something interesting happened: the two major NFT platforms OpenSea and Rarible both blacklisted the work's contract, and users who received the work could no longer see its content on auction platforms or in wallets built on the OpenSea SDK. In other words, the artwork CryptoAds was blocked by OpenSea and Rarible without any reason given.

Since the content of the work is mutable, blocking it at the front end — an Error 404 — itself constitutes an act of censorship. That such arbitrary conduct, contrary to the spirit of the crypto community, should appear on platforms that advertise themselves as serving crypto assets: is this not an irony directed at the blockchain's "decentralisation"?

The artist therefore redefined the work by an ingenious means: she updated the name, details, link and image of the NFT to the content displayed on OpenSea's 404 page, extending the English sense of NFT into "Not Found Tokens". Yet as the ideas of Web3 (the decentralised internet) take hold and decentralised services grow, these once-banned NFTs will one day resurface in decentralised media. At that point everyone will discover the "NFT" in their own wallet and reflect on the essence of the crypto spirit.

The work provoked wide discussion within the community, prompting people to consider how front-end pages can confiscate the freedom of artistic creation, and how the blockchain's ideal of decentralisation can be manipulated by centralised institutions.
