Foreword

Facing the "New Generation Games" exhibition, one might ask: "Are online virtual exhibitions or Crypto Art exhibitions still necessary, or do they have a future?" This question is precisely what my team and I confronted during the organization of this exhibition. Let us take a step back to 2021, when I collaborated with Liu Jiaying, the founder of ChiJin Art Museum and an artist deeply involved in the Crypto Art field, on two online Crypto Art exhibitions: "NOT HERE, NOT THERE" and "ENDORPHIN." The themes of these two exhibitions hinted at our then-ambiguous understanding of Crypto Art and online exhibitions: firstly, the virtual is a mirror of reality, stemming from reality yet not belonging to it; secondly, Crypto Art is distinguished from previous art forms not only by its virtual nature but also by its underlying operational mode. It is also worth mentioning that these two exhibitions had their unique historical context: firstly, during a special period, online exhibitions experienced a boom, and various forms of online exhibitions emerged in the art world. Virtual museums like ChiJin Art Museum provided a possibility for online exhibitions. Secondly, that period witnessed an explosive growth in Crypto Art globally, making it a hot topic in the art world. Three years later, with the rapid development of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and AI Large Models, we have entered a new era of artistic creation and experience, leading to the "New Generation Games" exhibition.

The theme "New Generation Games" is composed of "New Generation" and "Games." Previously, "New Generation" referred to a group of poets from the 1980s in China known as the "Third Generation Poets." The emergence of terms like "New Generation" and "New Youth" in that era heralded a new wave. Today, with concepts such as "Generation Z," each generation inevitably harbors different aspirations and definitions of the "New." The term "New Generation" also appears in fields like art and commerce. In this exhibition, "New Generation" refers to the generation of "Digital Natives" in artistic creation. In 2019, I curated an exhibition at United Art Museum titled "Undefined Future," which explored the relationship between art and technology. One of the groups involved was the same group featured in the "New Generation Games" exhibition. Most of them come from New Media or Digital Art disciplines in art academies. Unlike previous artists, they have faced a digital context from the start. The artists presented in this exhibition mostly have such professional backgrounds and are a generation that has realized digital existence early on.

Furthermore, "Games" pertain to the essential origin of art creation. Dutch historian Johan Huizinga, in his book "Homo Ludens," argues that the essence of "games" is not part of "ordinary" or "real" life but steps out of "real" life into a domain entirely governed by its activities. In games, people can reach the pinnacle of creativity. As an engine of happiness, games carry the players' will for free creation and the ideal of reconstructing reality. Therefore, "games" are becoming an artistic vision for new generation artists. Their characteristics of freedom, creativity, and interactivity become important avenues for artists to express thoughts and explore the world. In a broader non-artistic context, since 2000, with the rapid development of the internet, the iteration speed of games has been astonishing. Internet games, to some extent, represent a public social space. Virtual technology and the imagination of the virtual have brought about the integration of games and new technologies like the Metaverse. Hence, we must rethink whether the ultimate form of art in the future could be a game. This exhibition invites 26 new generation artists to exhibit at the online TOPBIDDER ARTBYSS venue. The venue's unique Cthulhu style itself carries a strong sense of playfulness, and the artists' works, created using Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, and other new technologies, present reflections and explorations of future technology, nature, and social relationships. Together with the venue, they form an immersive virtual world, becoming an interactive game based on the internet experience shared with the audience.

The "New Generation Games" exhibition aims to explore the possibilities of deeply integrating the real world through "games" in the era of AI-generated ecosystems. It also hopes to witness the infinite possibilities of new generation artists at the intersection of virtual and reality, technology and art, as we enter an era of technological explosion.
